about

These songs were written under quarantine from March to June 2020 as part of the Laurelthirst Public House songwriting challenge. They were inspired by one- or two-word prompts by Taylor Kingman and written once per week, every week for eight weeks and shared with the Laurelthirst music community each Sunday. Then, on Monday of week nine, George Floyd was murdered. Out of respect and mourning, the contest was paused for a few weeks, and in the meantime I wrote the last two songs at my own prompting.

I always knew there'd be a time when I'd move on to other things, and with ten songs completed at a time of pretty drastic social and personal upheaval, I decided that time had come. I also felt like I had something special and wanted to do more with it, so I convened some musician friends who had been following along and through some socially distanced rehearsals and a lot of file sharing, the songs were transformed from solo acoustic to full band numbers. Most were adapted fairly straightforwardly, a couple getting reworked pretty drastically, but all of them were covered in the fingerprints of every band member who together shaped the final sound. It was recorded live in one day in October, then touched up, mixed, and mastered over the rest of year and into the new year. The end result is a document of these strange, scary, lonely times and a hope for brighter days ahead.

A quick note about the Laurelthirst: it’s about as much of an institution as the Portland music scene has. It’s been around since 1988, the open mic was the first place I ever routinely performed some two decades ago, I’ve been to many a jam-packed show there and played many a not-so-jam-packed show there myself since then. Recently it was saved from the wrecking ball of progress by the local music community and this pandemic could not have come at a worse time for them and each of our ever-dwindling independent music venues that are the heart and soul of this city. I look forward to the day that we can play these songs on that stage, and all those other stages, once again.
